Volunteers needed with GPS units to hike around sections of the Avalon Area of Patapsco State Park to help Maryland DNR locate exact GPS coordinates of specific areas where the invasive wavyleaf basketgrass plant is invading the Patapsco River Valley. Saturday, August 14. 2-3 pm. Ellicott City Historic Hike. In this lively one-hour walking tour along Main Street, learn the 5Rs (Railroad, River, Road, Rock and Rebuild) of Ellicott City. Learn about 20 historic sites, including the raging Patapsco River, the first national road, the town’s hidden cobblestone alley, B&O Railroad Museum, the gigantic rock cliffs alongside the sidewalks and the mysterious marker near the Railroad bridge. Discover the abundance of antique stores, restaurants and specialty shops as you walk along the bustling historic district. CANCELLED Sunday, August 15. 12-3pm. ADVENTURE! Guided kayak/canoe ride along Patapsco River. Meet at parking lot near Main St. Bridge in Sykesville (Off Route 32). Bring your own kayak or canoe. Sorry, no rentals available. (usually meets 3rd Sunday of month through September). Rain or shine.
