Wednesday February 2, 2011. Sylvia Huestis will be speaking on the topic of Rain Gardens on behalf of the Howard County Master Gardener program at the Miller Library at 9421 Frederick Road in Ellicott City. This program will explain how to design and site gardens that specifically help to reduce run-off and erosion, benefiting the environmental health of the rivers and Bay. Suggestions for native plants to use in the garden will also be offered.

Come learn about the opportunities in Howard County for improving stream, lake, and pond water quality here in Howard County and the Chesapeake Bay! The meeting will focus on the draft Howard County Watershed Implementation plan phase II which is the framework for reducing nutrient loads from Howard County water bodies and impacting the Chesapeake Bay. Join experienced kayaker and PHG member Brian Schexnayder to lead us for a leisurely ride in a section of the lower Patapsco River in the Daniels Area of Patapsco State Park. Meet and park at the public parking lot or along Daniels Road near the dam. The water depth is mostly shallow, 1-4 feet and is a flat water paddle. Proper disposal of potentially hazardous wastes is vital to keeping our waterways clean and healthy. At the Household hazardous waste collection event you can dispose of your prescription medicines, fluorescent bulbs and mercury thermometers. Also bring along your gasoline, paint thinners, lighter fluid and glues or adhesives that have the potential to catch fire. Other materials such as pool chemicals and bleaches, can react violently to explode or produce toxic gases.
