BOATING
The Patapsco River provides a variety of non-motorized boating opportunities.
Canoes and kayaks are frequently used along major expanses of the River
during normal flows. Flow
rates within the Patapsco River vary widely from season to season
and are hazardous at some water levels. Generally, the best times for
boating are in the spring and early summer. The upper regions of the
Patapsco are generally faster flowing and river velocities decrease
dramatically as you get closer to the tidal portion of the river near
Baltimore. The same river gradient which was useful in producing power
in earlier eras is now available for the boating enthusiast. There are
several areas with significant rapids. Recently, two of the four dams
which had remained across the River after Hurricane Agnes in 1972, have
been removed. There are studies underway to determine the feasability
of removing the two remaining dams. These two dams (Bloede and Daniels)
still require a portage. There are several new boat launching sites
in the Daniels and Avalon sections of the Park. There are also other
areas where roads are adjacent to the River where enthusiasts can put
in or take out. Additional information on boating on the Patapsco from
Woodstock to Elkridge can be found at American
Rivers.
